How to Live in the Moment
Do you know how to savor a moment for yourself?
Because staying present in the moment will keep you emotionally healthy, even in a crisis.
Why is it important to be present in the moment?
Life is only happening right now, so there’s nothing more important than that.
Whatever has happened is dead. It’s gone. No matter how many times you rehash it in your memory, that incident is gone. It does not happen anymore. It doesn’t matter. It could be the worst tragedy ever to you. The worst trauma. It could be the best of times. The greatest of times, but it is not alive, and the future is unborn.
Summary: If you want any chance of having the future you desire, the only way you’re going to achieve that is by what you’re doing in the present. So the present is important because it creates a future that you want to wake up to and live in.
Let me illustrate:
My Struggle with Being Present and Living in the Moment
When I’m playing the guitar, I’m there with the music. And if I’m going to a concert, I’m there at the concert. It’s one of the places that I’m most present. (There is a special connection I have with music that activates my intellect. When I hear good music, suddenly, my self-awareness gets a whole lot stronger and I dial eagerly into the moment.)
As a matter of fact – to be super real and transparent, as we always try to be – I was supposed to be doing this work right now, and I was pushing it off a little because I was concerned about a deal that I’m working on. And I was forecasting into the future, and I was getting really uncomfortable with what’s going to happen. What if it doesn’t happen? And what if it actually does happen?
So I started this work, but I could tell that my intellect wasn’t strong enough in the moment to control that. So I went into the other room, picked up Mega Tower, and belted out a tune from Gregg Allman, I’m No Angel, which is very apropos. Then I flipped from him to The Commodores to Lionel Richie. Then I came right back in here and dialed in to the present.
So you’ve got to find little interventions for yourself and be able to bust yourself like I just did and be able to pull yourself back to the present moment.
And in the meantime, what this community is all about is being that for you. We want to be your “music.” If you don’t have something else that does that for you, that’s what we should do for you. That’s how we commune, that’s who we are.
**How does one become present in the moment? **
You can use techniques and practices to force yourself back into the present moment. We’re talking about your daily practices, processes, and systems that engage you in moments.
1.Listening to your breath helps you become present.
2.Picking your fingernail once and just feeling that and staring at it brings you into the moment, helps you become present.
3.Taking time out to smell the air literally helps you become present.
4.It’s literally running your fingers through your hair and feeling those sensations.
All those basic things bring you to the moment. And those are techniques to help you become present, and aware of your senses, and awake to what’s happening right now. But as effective as they are, none of them will ever work the way you want them to work until your intellect is fortified. You’ll pull yourself back to the present, but if your emotions are in charge, you’ll quickly slip back into regrets, desires, worries, hopes, and so on. So it’s good to keep bringing yourself back, but ultimately you don’t want to have to keep doing that.
What you really want is to be able to stay in the present, and that comes from developing your intellect. One of the benefits of being present is being in the moment and being fully aware of what’s going on. So then you have better capability and capacity to make choices that you want to make because you’re aware of everything so that your future is the future you want to live in.
See, if you’re not in the moment, you miss out on so many cues, signals, signs, so many things that you need to be aware of in order to make your best choices in order to take in what’s really going on. And if you’re drifting in the past and into the future, all the time you miss out on those things. And having missed out on those things, you will suffer great consequences in the future, not to mention that you’ll miss out on great things in the present moment.
And so we’re glad to have you, and we know this is a struggle, but don’t worry: If you are listening to what I’m saying right now, then you’ve got this, your present moment.
